Girls in Engineering: Challenge Day Success!

This morning, 40 of our Year 8 girls took on our Girls in Engineering challenge this year — and they did not disappoint!

Divided into Houses and working in teams, they put their engineering skills to the test by designing and building bridges strong enough to span a 500mm ravine and hold a wooden car, using limited materials. As if that wasn’t enough, they then raced into the second challenge: creating balloon-powered cars, applying Newton’s laws of motion in a fun and practical way.

The aim of the day was to raise aspirations and confidence in engineering, and it was fantastic to see so many students engaged, curious and excited about the possibilities within the subject. This group was the most engaged we’ve seen yet, showing creativity, teamwork and some seriously impressive engineering thinking throughout the day.

Staff commented that it was an absolute delight to teach such enthusiastic and capable students, and that it would be a real pleasure to teach them again should they choose to pursue Engineering as part of their future subject options.

Congratulations to Arundel House, who demonstrated outstanding problem-solving skills to take the top spot, with a very close finish between Petworth (2nd) and Romsey (3rd) — well done to all involved!

The future of engineering is looking bright!
