Crookhorn visits the Vedic Hindu Temple

The Religious Studies department recently went to the Vedic Hindu Temple in Southampton with 42 of our Year 7-10 students. Students were welcomed by the priest and had the opportunity to watch a service take place. This allowed them to experience how and what Hindus use during their worship.

Students showed great curiosity and asked some fantastic questions. They also had an opportunity to look around the temple at the different statues and colourful displays. They then had a talk about the core beliefs within Hinduism and got the opportunity to ask further questions and engage with the priest.

As always, the students were a credit to the College and showed great respect within the holy building.

Some of our students had this to say about the trip:

I really enjoyed going to the Hindu temple as the priest obviously felt strongly about his religion which made me fascinated by it. Also the way he described the different parts of his religion and how he celebrates them was completely immersive.

I really enjoyed going to the temple because it was fun and I could learn about other cultures. I have never been to a Hindu temple before so it was a very good experience for me. I would definitely go again if I had the opportunity.

My experience of the Hindu temple was amazing, we got to see how they did their holy ritual and how important their religion is to them. When we went in the temple we had to take of our shoes so that the floor doesn’t get dirty and then we sat on chairs and the Priest was telling us all about when the temple was built, what they do and we asked some questions. Then we watched the priest and a few others do the ritual that took about 15 minutes, they would sing a holy song. Then the priest would have a special drum made out of clay and he would play a slow beat while that all sang. Then we would ask some more questions about the ritual and then we went back to school. I thought it was very good and that when you get the opportunity to go to a temple you should go.
